Flow Finds Me
Aug 12th
Entering a new flow…Just in a great mood…chill, calm, excited, focused. Relaxed.
Loved working on my live looping software last night (Ableton Live, Midi Translator, Waves GTR solo) on my laptop and using the big 25″ screen (w/ Air Con and fan running in the van!) Looks SO BIG. So intense! And it sooo cozy, propped up on the futon bed on a reading pillow…soooo fun. Had a big WOW moment. I feel focused on my dream now. Fiiinally. Nothing like seeing it on the big screen!
I’m taking my old software ‘templates’ I created in Israel (found ‘em, whew!) that tell my computer how to loop, what effects to use, etc, and modifying them for the new show.
Booked a first gig – a small private party in IL. Perfect for getting sea legs and kicking my as* to get ready…
We put new glass in the windshield yesterday after a small mishap. Now I’ll go to Best Buy to re-attach the screen for the backup camera.
The new Honda 2000 W Generator is running my little ship great so I can avoid paying for hotel rooms on really hot/cold days. Also should be great for playing Outdoor gigs. Wanna book me for a gig in the woods? Have sound system and quiet generator!
Still endless details to attend to (releasing CD, my shipment, booking gigs, a street performing rig, van stuff, etc.) but everything is coming together nicely.
Thank You flow, for finding me.

Perfecting the Purple People Eater
Aug 8th
Guys, I have been on a non-stop, ass kicking, one track path to get my home built. I could have gotten an old RV, (or an apartment and a pickup truck) and possibly got a quicker start, but I’m glad I went the way I did, I’m getting a really cool home more to the spec that I need w/ a rehearsal space – and newer for my budget…
Btw, My new CD “Time To Rise” is being manufactured and I should have it in 10 days. (If any of you are internet savvy and can help me figure out how to do an donation deal for downloading my CD as well, I would be really, really appreciative of the help!)
Folks have been asking and I’ve been promising pics of the van…here it is so far!

Backup Camera is always on for switching lanes, too. Cargo Van makes warning beeping sound when in reverse.

Special thanks to my Dad and my new mom Andi and new grandma Edith for letting me base at their place! When U.S. Customs decided to search my shipment of music gear from Israel and delay it I had somewhere nice and homey to go!
The Liberation of the Giant Purple People Eater!
Jul 10th
I did some test driving to figure out what I wanted and it all became very clear.
It turned out that what I was looking for – A gently used, extended length, high top Ford cargo van – was sooooooooo rare…so I flew to test drive some! A couple days ago I was in Savage, MN (LOVE that name!), Pittsburgh (layover), and Norfolk, VA all on the same day.
I’d really planned to buy a white 1999 Van in MN – had a mechanic look it over and ran the carfax…got there on an hour of sleep – and was sooooo dissapointed. Inside was a mess – floor holes, AC didn’t work…the mechanic had focused on the bigger issues and overlooked the living stuff…
Instead of going back to IL, I made a decision to go directly to look at another van I’d been aware of for quite some time and had also had checked out. It was a 2006, w/ only 65k miles. And Purple. VERY purple…Did I mention it was PURPLE?!
I LOVED it. I Bought it. After seeing so many other tired used vans, I APPRECIATE its youth so much. $8,500 plus $370 for new tie rods, brakes and an alignment – And some serious traveling to get it. Its CLEAN, very well maintained, and drives and works like new. Would have been $36,000 new w/ the high top, so this a ‘matsiya’ – a find. I’ll take a few scratches and dings, thanks – This thing ROCKS! More pricey than the MN van but its perfect. This is my home AND car for a while so this is a big relief!!! Plus, call question my sanity (you should be doing this anyways by now), but I LOVE the color.
I started doing some basic things to make it liveable (temporary curtains, etc.) in the interim before we go to town fixing it up. Driving my Dad’s SUV in the Chicago suburbs I lost it in some some parking lots. I will never have that problem w/ this baby, lol!
After getting the alignment done, I looked into stereos that take ipods, hand free phones, and back up cameras – a lot of today – and finally went swimming in the Ocean and listened to a band out there…LOVED it. Took a shower in the van afterwards to get the ocean water off…sooo handy…
Man, did I mention I LOVE this van?!?!?!?!!? The cargo area (from behind the seats to the back) is just over 6′ high (for standing), 6′ wide and almost 12′ long. Plus there’s a ton of storage above the drivers/passenger area, and even room around those seats. I’ve seen smaller bedrooms. (Well, in Israel, lol.) Its just big enough to rehearse and travel/live in…It has a rounded shape inside which gives a great vibe. Pics soon…
Driving back towards IL today…can’t wait to start building the home in the van, get my equipment working smooth and developing the show…ooo…just got word that grandpa’s health isn’t as good as we thought, so gonna go camp out w/him for Moral support for a while…
Hey, I’d like to recommend Larry the mobile mechanic who inspected my vehicle before I showed up and then fixed it for me. Very helpful and honest guy. If you ever break down around Norfolk, VA…its a cool business plan – pull into a parking lot and start working… gotreauxlarry@yahoo.com. 757-650-9022. (Actually this dealer has one more purple people eater in case anyone is looking…)

Checkin’ Out Lebanon, Syria and Jordan…
Jun 4th
Had my first vacation in a loooong time…
My Cousin David was a tour guide for years…he took us on the most wicked tour of Northern Israel..waterfalls and beaches, hiking trails of all types, historical monuments…just cool…

There were places that looked prehistoric, military borders with beautiful views, incredible swims and more…when you go jump in the water in the USA you just don’t get the view of the 2,000 year old Roman Arches.

Some places had a prehistoric look and some reminded me of just a bit of the midwest (well aside from the banana trees and sunflower seeds)…
It was incredibly refreshing to go to new (to me), beautiful areas and swim, hike and see into other countries…amazing…

btw, the CD is DONE. Just waiting on the cover art!! Will be ready for download soon!!
Heading to the USA in about 30 hours!!! Wow!!! First stop, Manhattan…

The Plan…THE VAN!!!
Apr 26th
I’m learning from all sorts of experienced folks…from the old couple driving around a snazzy $100,000+ RV, to the nearly homeless person living in their car, to the person in the old but reliable van that has a job, gym membership, and volunteer position…
I find it all fascinating…
(Click on some of these highlighted links below to see what I’ve been checking out)
After spending a month online looking at class B RVs (Conversion vans w/ kitchenette, shower/toilet) (Really Wanted one of these babies!) Class C Rvs (Medium sized RVs that have a cab over a Van), Travel Trailers, Camping Trailers for pickup trucks (fell in love w/ this one), Sprinter Cargo Vans, and even a freakin’ dump truck converted into a mobile home…
…I fiiiinally figured out what I need!!! Of course, I may change change my mind based on what I actually come across in the real world, (if you would like to trade your Roadtrek Class B RV towards me producing your CD, or a decade of guitar lessons please contact me now!) but I think I know what to look for now…(Keep in mind a few months ago I didn’t even know what a class anything was – G-d bless the internet!)
Drum roll please…
A High Top, Extended length Conversion Van!!
Yay!
(That link is an overpriced example but you get the picture)
They are giving these things away 2nd hand compared anything else I’ve seen.
I’ll augment this van with a camping cooler/ice, small porta-potty for emergencies, “stealth sink”, camping shower, camping stove, tearing out most the seats…and a membership to 24 Hour Fitness (a gym chain which gives you access to hundreds of their gyms, especially around CA.)
Eventually I may add a 2nd car battery and solar panel on top for a microwave, 12V Fan, and charging my future iphone (New one comes out a few weeks after I’m stateside-been waiting foreverrrr).
Check out this regular van homemade dwelling
and this one… (These are more extensive than I plan to go at first, but it can evolve…)
Well, reviews make 24hr fitness sound (at best) like the Burger King of Gyms, but I just want a decent place to shower (flip-flops please!) and to keep my workout addiction going. Plus these places are suuuper cheap. Costco apparently sells a $300 pre-paid 2 year membership – thats $12.50/month, a quarter of what I’m paying in Jerusalem…I’m in.
I chose the high top conversion van concept because in order to play a lot of gigs/improve my performance skills/really push my music/CD/artist career – while enjoying life…I need to:
-Rehearse my stage set up standing up in my van between gigs.
-Sleep comfortably anywhere w/o paying for hotels.
-Prepare healthy food
-Have a reliable, no headache vehicle that I can afford
-Save money w/o the overhead/stress of making rent
-Be Free to travel w/o worrying about my weekly clientele.
-Have room for a guest traveller
-Check out and even play at cool events that have a social aspect
Now class B RVs seem just wonderful…My good buddy JD in So. Cal was really pushing for this option for me…Its an amazing option – a hotel room in a van…and I’m still gonna look seriously at them…but they are pricey for newer models…the problem is 1) no room to rehearse my show (I need like a 5′ x 5′ area so I’d have to rip stuff out), 2) I’d have to buy an older model because of the high price. 3) I’m responsible for keeping those older appliances, pumps, etc. working, as well as the mechanical part – and its $100/hr to pay for repairs…ouch!
My conversion van will be exactly a Class B Rv – minus the plumbing, etc…thus with more space and less things to break.
Actually, I kind of like the idea of being ‘forced’ to go to the gym in order to shower properly. I’ve been reading about all sorts of cool ways to sponge bath, etc in a pinch and the $20 solar camping shower looks awesome. Plus free restrooms are everywhere…but I’ll be hitting those gyms a lot.
Sure, most people will think I am freaking crazy (and a some will be supportive or even envious). But I’m cool with that…I’m actually excited for the possibility of a new lifestyle which does not include rent…I’ve been paying over $1,000/month rent in Jerusalem. Its a neat place but it keeps me on the hamster habitrail!
The van keeps you from buying a lot stuff (no room)…I figure I’ll break even on rent after a year, and save after that…
This feels like a 2-3 year plan to me, but thats hard to predict…
Parking is an issue covered in a lot of these blogs. I’ll get a nice looking Family-ish van w/window shades that can blend anywhere…There are always Walmarts, state and national parks, the parking lot of the club I played at (college gigs always have a hotel room), middle class suburban neighborhoods, hotel lots…its endless…
This one on ebay is a 2006 Ford Van w/33,000 miles, an extra battery, backup camera, great condition for $15k…wow… I’d grab this one, though I bet I can find an even better deal – on ebay you are bidding against the entire planet and you can’t know for sure how it feels, smells, etc! I’ll be looking locally in CA on Craigslist…
In order to make sure that I’m really made of what it takes to do this, I plan to drive Dad’s ‘99 SUV around for a while and sleep in it, etc – just to get the feel…after that a full sized van and gym membership should feel like freakin’ MTV ‘cribs’!
I’m really excited for the lifestyle, too…sounds funny…certainly will see my family and old friends a LOT more than I do living in Israel!! Plus I’ve been working on my English (joke) so I should be able to meet folks just fine…and mainly I like the idea of being able to focus on my craft…
When I lived in my tent over a few summers (Madison, WI and Boulder, Co), I really thrived on the simplicity. I’m not sure if us ADD folks were made for having all this stuff!!!
Its funny…19 years ago, I thought a rainbow (think hippie) gathering was the coolest thing ever and 9 years ago I found it annoying. Today I think I’d enjoy myself at one…(doubt that I’ll go this year but I do hope to hit some cool street performing opps…) Its like I am returning to honor my inner-hippie/alterna-self. Fun!!
I’ll be basing in Santa Monica, CA in July to street perform, staying w/ my buddy JD, and quite likely be loosely basing out of somewhere in CA long-term as I gig.
On a side note, I find the politics there interesting (as if the politics here in Israel weren’t interesting enough, lol!). A good friend and old guitar student of mine, Melissa is (half of) one of a handful of legally married Lesbian couples in CA. Thats one interesting fight going on out there. Even more at the forefront of people’s minds, CA is in biiig trouble financially. If they legalize pot in the November election, I predict a big turnaround. I haven’t smoked in nearly a decade, and don’t plan to again, but it would be wild to be playing at THAT party…
Another random thought…Its been suggested to me that I have to get this ‘egotistical’ side of me out of my system (performing), so that I can go back to the business of helping people – coaching musicians and so forth…(and get married and start a family for G-dsakes!) Which is cool…but I’m feeling like it comes from another place…its not about the applause or adulation (though I certainly get off on crowd vibe-energy)…but its about wanting to completely delve deeply into the art, share it and be it and live from it – focus all my musical energy in one place…hmmm…
Well…on that note, y’all have a great day. I have ONE acoustic song left to record for the CD, and a few fixes to record, plus 3 more 10 hour mix days over the next 2 weeks and then (G-d willing) its done…
Oh, and…
Oh, and Friday I’m having a ‘Garage Sale’ at my apartment from 10:30AM-2pm!!!
P.S. I’m adding links to some great blogs about van living and related topics…
Urban Van Dweller – Very Insightful – philosiphy of why and how he’s living in his camper van…
Stealth Van Dweller – Awesome how-to – very practical and helpful by a very experienced guy.
Feel The Fear (and do it anyway)
Apr 14th
So I kind of chilled out today…I hadn’t felt this stressed in years…was pushing so hard on the new CD, gear sales, and everything else…and suddenly I hit a wall this week where I started getting barely productive on the CD and feeling downright afraid of the undefined future – so I took a step back…My internal compass was telling me something, I just had to listen. Turned out it was screaming “Dude, you have enough big production songs for the record already, they’re great, Stop! Now tidy them up, mix them, knock out a few cool acoustic numbers and go through the steps of finding a booking agent so you stay afloat financially when you land in the US!”
My gut is smart. If it was up to me, I could live in the studio for the next year and forget to play a single show…but the reality is, as excited as I am for this CD, and as much as I love the recording process, my big alterior motive for doing it is to have a grand excuse to get out and tour!
So now the CD is more like 3/4 or so done…maybe 4 more 10 hour mixing sessions and half that much time tracking…I have to find a cool cover concept…I loved the hand painted vibe I did for the Aquarium Conspiracy CD…hmmm…
I’ve saved enough cash from the sales of my gear to buy all the new gear that I need. I am so mega excited for the new technology that is happening out there. Apple updated their specs today to make their laptops faster w/ longer battery life. New pedals are coming out that run off USB power so I can play on the street. These are great times to live in!
My buddy said to me a) if you weren’t afraid of making these massive life changes, there would be something wrong with you, and b) that fear gives you the extra oomph (as in fight or flight) to get the job done.
Nice.
The audiobook Feel The Fear (and do it anyway) quotes “Ships in harbor are safe, but that isn’t what ships are made for.” I keep reminding myself that I made a living street performing a for a couple of summers in my early 20’s, and the last time I was this scared was before the wildest, most amazing summer of my life – where at the age of 17 after street performing at some Grateful Dead concerts, I pitched my tent in the backyard of the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Co., studied with Recording artist Steve Tibbets, hung out with beat poet Allen Ginsburg and his psychic, grey haired, herb smoking roommate Harry Smith, and had the wildest adventures in the meantime…
I subsisted for the first month or so on a stash of granola and powered milk. (Which may be why I looked so skinny.) This pic I just received (thanks Doug!) is an inspiration to return to this state!
Now that I’ve taken the first steps to contact some agents (and it may take 100 or more before I find someone good to work with), I feel like I am on the path and the stress has subsided…
Time to put the finishing touches on the record…this whole approach of mixing/editing once a week, then running home and making changes/additions in the studio is a really fun process! Its the new way…
See y’all soon!
Passover and the Oat Matzah Nazi
Mar 30th
Intense seder with a very religious family and 20 guests. He’s an American ‘kiruv’ rabbi (they help bring Jews closer to Judaism) I became friends with years ago. A nice, grounded guy. I tried sitting in on some of their seminars a few years back…great program, good people…only I ultimately ended up going further away, not coming closer…
I found my seat next to a Mid-30’s authoress visiting from CA. She had seemed friendly enough at first, if a bit type-A, mumbling during the first half about her low sugar grape juice and how she was on a cleansing fast, and asked the rabbi all sorts of minutiae questions like how much bitter herb she should use…she seemed very concerned with doing everything juuust right…
During the seder, my rabbi friend made some really touching and insightful observations, and people added their commentary to everything, but I am waaaaay too ADD for this kind of thing overall. If ADD meds are going to help me sit through this kind of thing, I don’t want them.
I took off for an hour or so to record vocals to a song and answer some emails at home…When I sat back down CA authoress tried making hand signals to me about what I should be doing (there’s a part where you don’t talk, hold up the matzah and various customs) and seemed all flustered when I didn’t get her hand signals. Just an uptight chick I figured and waved it off….and THEN, on a table chock full of matzah everywhere, I accidentally ate a few square inches of one of her specially made Oat Matzas. (Don’t leave food in front of me.) It tasted weird, and when we had discovered my transgression, I got to listen to 2 intense lectures from her about how they were expensive and she can only eat certain foods and on and on…I apologized after the first lecture, and then cut her off in the middle of the 2nd lecture – told her firmly to relax and tryyyy to have fun. Whoa.
It was midnight, 3.5 hours into the seder before they STARTED to eat. Great food, btw…but not cut out for this sort of thing…ah well, I tried!
Save Passover! (Holy !%#$&^!!!, It works!!!!)
Mar 28th
So…The Jewlicious.com staff have asked me for various sexual favors in exchange for doing my web design, which I am NOT granting, and in lieu of this will be helping them to promote their whole Charitable thing… This gets Passover food to folks in poverty out here, and since I am always beating up poor people and taking their lunch money, it’s really the least I could do…
It’s been a crazy week of trying to get my new website working. I cannot believe it freaking works! Thanks to my friends Davilicious (The artist formerly known as ‘David’ from Jewlicious.com) and webmaster genius/ladies man extraordinaire Yaniv Friedensohn and the lovely Janet from Broadjam (Janet have you met Yaniv yet? If you ever get out to the Middle East…) for pitching in to help get me up and running w/ the cool new site!
Just in time for Passover, my Jewish Girl Blues video will be hitting 700,000 Youtube views (Estimated to be at a MILLION views total on all the various web channels now!) The Producer for that video (shown here w/ his face hidden in the “Making of Jewish Girl Blues”) has finally come out of music comedy hiding (for fear of religious persecution/retribution and stoning) as the producer of the Jewish Girl videos!! Daniel Remer is an awesome video producer, a true artist and just a cool guy. And he’s getting married soon! Mazal Tov!! Find him here to make your video.
In other news I am making progress on selling all my music gear and yet there is still lots left! See Full list here…also The CD is getting done and I like it (depsite being a perfectionistic freakazoid)…should be all finished by the end of May…and I am slammed w/clients. Nevertheless, if you would like to get in to record or take lessons w/me in Jerusalem before I split, well come on in and join the party! 054-303-4741. We’re going hardcore balls 2 the wall for the next 2 months! Once I am on the road, catch me for skype (web chat) lessons or producing/recording via the net.
Feeling really positive about my decision to take off and tour…a once in a lifetime opportunity…will update y’all about that as I go…I am thinking of spending some time street performing in California to develop the act (And see some friends and family)…Manhattan in early June…ooo – btw, already told my landlord and bought the plane ticket!
Cya,

"Vat, you don't like my chicken soup?!"
Mar 8th
By advertising my gear for sale I’ve opened myself up to some really cool people, as well as every crazy person in Jerusalem (and there are LOTS, ever heard of Jerusalem syndrome?? lol! Crazy people LOVE to buy 2nd hand.) Some day I want to do my Jerusalem syndrome TV sketch…met some funnnny characters out here…Remind me to do the ’sexy slut’ routine!!!
Then there is the guilt factory…A woman called me to buy something and told me I should stay in Israel…”You think its going to be any better in America?” (Imagine with a “Vat, you don’t like my chicken soup?!” kind of voice) and I got a facebook post “Are you leaving “Eretz Yisrael??” (Biblical Hebrew for the land of Israel – guilt auto-embedded) then and I ran into a rabbi who knows I’m taking off who started in about getting a ‘big record deal’ w/some implied mild sarcasm…wow. Actually, I think like most ‘baal teshuvah’ (born-again/newly religious) rabbis, he used to be a musician…there are some similar perks in these career paths…I’ll let you do the math…
People here can be really sensitive to this leaving Israel thing. I think most people in their right mind think about leaving this country at times – even the Israelis. Yet there are a lot of cultural and religious memes about being here…
It IS special here…I was at an impromptu shabbat dinner Friday night in Nachlaot that got me all nostalgic…really nice vibe – and lots of spirit…a cultural thing you could never quite find in the US (all pretty chill Israelis)…a magical little happening…
Its funny…some people are like “oh you’re gonna be a ROCK STAR.” occassional miiiild sarcasm…In America, while the music industry is super challenging, its still possible to make a living as an artist while under the radar of the mass media. Madonna might slit her own wrists before doing 800 seat theaters, but there are guys making a good living doing that. (And for starters, I’ll be trying to open for those guys, lol!)
Part of the appeal of living in the vehicle for a while is the low overhead to enable these early dues-paying stages…Truth is I’ve never been that big on driving…must change that attitude in a hurry! And I’ll have to find ways to cook, exercise, socialize and generally keep healthy and balanced…(love your suggestions/experience!) Eventually maybe I’ll pick an area to base out of and rent a small place…
Initially I had some fears about feeling lonely in my vehicle for days at a time while I’m traveling in the US, until I realized I can go days at a time without any real in-person interaction here as well! It can do your head in for sure…so why not be actually pursuing my lifelong ambition of doing my own music full time?
Ok, a paragraph for the music folks…a few months back I recorded some demos in “Live” – the software I’m using to do my crazy live looping stuff…I figured they were throw-away rough drafts even though I liked them…but now I imported those tracks from the demos into Logic (my studio software) and started redo-ing the parts one by one one…cool to have that structure of the song already in place as I redo the parts…guitars and bass is pretty easy for me – 2-3 takes just to be sure its nailed…thats been my job for so long…but singing is the realllly hard part for me…still finding my voice…20 takes is good! I was in the zone for about 20 seconds last night – super chill mellow great warm vocal tone — before I burned out my voice w/too much screaming…this morning I got some nice vocals…I’m good at the screamy bluesy rock stuff, but when I just chill and hit the mellow stuff it can sound so nice…(girls tend to like it better for sure…) Its not easy yet for me to hit it consistently, but its coming…learning to sing/find my voice is a big part of the self-actualization process that is coming w/making this record…
It occurred to me today how awesome it is in this day and age…to record at home essentially for free (I more than paid for the gear/learned how to use it producing other artists) and then mix the entire record w/ a pro for ~ $3,500. Thats peanuts compared to a major label release, or even my 1st indy CD. What an amazing opportunity …I really do feel grateful…Don’t even get me started about Youtube…Its a brave new world out there!
Love your comments on facebook and/or below!
Manic!
Mar 4th
So life has, in a good way, gone nuts…Once a week I’m doing a 10 hour mixing session in TLV. Then I run home and record my next song to be mixed for the album…except oops, suddenly my business has exploded so I’m doing 3 other people’s records in my studio…um, how did this happen? Amazing how many folks show up when you announce you’re leaving! Seems its going to be hard to leave! Even just selling my insane amount (tho steadily dwindling) of music gear I’m suddenly getting noticed by studios, musicians, etc. that say they can’t believe they never heard of me…its a small scene here…
Hmmm…its tempting to push a career here – you get to be a huge fish in a small pond (pun intended)…except…where do you go?!? Its a population the size of Chicago! The nearest place to play is Europe, which is a plane ride. Syrians and Egyptians aren’t so into Jewish Electrocoustic Acid Folk Funk Jam band rockers (because of our horns)…and most Israelis seem to be trying to get out of here to get their break in the USA….I never really focused on performing here – just made sure I was making a living by producing and teaching, etc…but from what I did do I can’t see it being as full time thing here for me, in English, etc – unless I had gigs around the world…
So I feel I’m making a good move to base for a while in the USA, yet I have the feeling I will end up back here at some point…I feel connected here on some unexplicable level…yet, kind of letting it all go into flow for now…
Anyways, I’m mixing at I Scream studio in Ramat Gan (TLV suburb)…love these guys. I worked with an engineer, Ronen Hillel 4 years ago when I was at Waves Audio – he was mixing Yehuda Polliker, who had a bunch of hits in Israel way back when…I played on some of Yehuda’s tunes in the Waves Audio studio…I saw Ronen was really talented and he ended up mixing the track “Axe To Fall” for me…Now Ronen is busy mixing the Eurovision contest (a huge deal out here) so he turned me on to Ron Karseboom, who just kicks ass. Ron had a track that he wrote played and recorded used in one of the American Pie movies. He’s got great ears, a really good musical sense and speaks fluent freaking English…I’m learning a ton from working with Ron. When I leave I’m planning to send people to this studio…Its cozy, the vibe is good and the guys are really talented engineers…
I’m kind of on a manic buzz from all the activity going on…haven’t been this busy in a decade or so…wow!
Hope everyone is well and looking forward to chilling w/ you all soon!
